What can I expect to gain from attending?

The Institute for the Psychology of Black Womanhood Scholars (IPBWS) is designed to support both your professional advancement and personal well-being. Grounded in the lived experiences of Black women faculty across academia, the Institute centers community, mentorship, and intentional reflection as essential tools for thriving in spaces that may not always fully recognize or affirm your identity.

Throughout the day, there are also intentional opportunities for community building and networking, thoughtfully integrated into the program to foster meaningful connection and support among participants.

Who is eligible to participate?

Black women academics in psychology and closely related fields are invited to apply to the Institute for the Psychology of Black Womanhood Scholars (IPBWS), a transformative, daylong, in-person gathering designed to support both your professional advancement and personal well-being. What are the cost or fees for the Institute?

There is no cost to attend the IPBWS. Acceptance to the Institute includes access to all sessions, workshops, and materials, as well as meals and refreshments throughout the day. However, we are unable to provide additional financial supports (e.g. scholarships, travel awards) for anyone.

Where can I find event details and schedules?

A list of speakers will be shared prior to the event. However, the detailed schedule and full program will only be provided to accepted attendees. This approach is intentional and helps ensure that both our speakers and participants have a level of privacy, allowing for open dialogue and meaningful engagement within the Institute.

When will I know if I have been accepted?

The IPBWS is a highly competitive program, and we are able to accept only 30 participants. This selective process allows us to create a focused, collaborative experience where participants can fully engage with the program and with one another.

All applications are carefully evaluated, and admission decisions will be announced on January 15. This timeline is designed to give accepted participants ample time to plan ahead and prepare for the program.

Do I have to present a research poster?

Accepted IPBWS participants are asked to present a research poster as a way to introduce their general areas of research and scholarly interest through an interactive presentation format. The poster session is designed to foster conversation, collaboration, and connection among participants.

Presenting a poster also provides participants with an opportunity to receive formal recognition or support from their home institutions, as it allows them to document their participation as a research presentation.

Is there a virtual option?

No, there is not a virtual attendance option for the IPBWS. The Institute is intentionally designed as an in-person experience to support meaningful engagement and authentic community building among participants.

Additionally, the nature of the conversations and activities places a strong emphasis on privacy and creating a trusted space for reflection and dialogue. Hosting the Institute in person helps ensure that participants can engage openly while building supportive connections with one another.

Do I have to attend the PBW Symposium to attend?

No, attending the PBW Symposium is not required to participate in this IPBWS gathering However, we strongly encourage attendees to take part in both, as the programs are designed with linked and complementary focuses that can enhance your overall experience.

Please note that the PBW Symposium registration is separate. Those accepted into the IPBWS are not automatically registered for the PBW Symposium. Even if you are attending the PBW Symposium, you must register separately for the PBW Symposium.
